Oromummaa: An Afaan Oromoo Word For 'Being Oromo'

Oromummaa: An Afaan Oromo Word For Being Oromo  "Oromummaa" is an Oromo word that simply means Oromoness or ኦሮሞነት in Amharic. That is all it means. If you do not understand the Afaan Oromo language, you are at risk of falling into the trap set for you. Without linguistic and cultural understanding, it’s easy to misinterpret the term based on how it is misused in certain contexts.   Unfortunately, some politically motivated individuals have deliberately distorted the meaning of Oromummaa to malign the Oromo people's just cause. Do not allow yourself to be manipulated by such narratives, which serve nothing but harmful agendas. Ask yourself: if you belong to any ethnic, cultural, or religious identity, don’t you take pride in your language, traditions, and values? The same applies to Oromummaa—it is a natural expression of Oromo identity, culture, and heritage. Whether you say it in Afaan Oromoo, Amharic, English, or any other language, the meaning remains the same: being ...

Oromo Nationalism and the Ethiopian Discourse: Between Misrepresentation and Democratic Aspiration

Image
Oromo Nationalism and the Ethiopian Discourse: Between Misrepresentation and Democratic Aspiration For much of Ethiopia's modern history, the Oromo people—constituting the country's largest ethno-linguistic group—have lived on the margins of political power. Oromo nationalism emerged not from a desire to isolate or destroy the Ethiopian state, but as a historical and moral response to systematic exclusion, cultural erasure, and political domination. Today, as Ethiopia grapples with deep-rooted questions of identity, governance, and pluralism, Oromo nationalism remains at the heart of the country’s unresolved national question. Yet, it continues to be maligned, misunderstood, and deliberately distorted within dominant state and elite narratives. This article explores the origins and trajectory of Oromo nationalism and critiques how the broader Ethiopian discourse—particularly its elite-driven, centralist, and often Amhara-chauvinist variants—has portrayed the movement. It also a...

A Response to Lifetime President of Eritrea Isaias Afewerki's Remarks on Oromummaa

Image
A Re sponse to Lifetime President of Eritrea Isaias Afewerki's Remarks on Oromummaa Isaias Afwerki’s rule is central to understanding Eritrea’s unique political trajectory. As the founding leader of independent Eritrea, he consolidated absolute power after the liberation war, systematically dismantling any prospects for democratic governance. Isaias has never allowed national elections, suspended the implementation of the constitution, and suppressed all forms of political pluralism. Under his leadership, Eritrea has become a highly militarized, surveillance-driven state where the lines between civilian and military life are blurred. The indefinite national service program—initiated under his orders—has been widely condemned as a form of forced labor and social control, designed not for national defense but to prevent youth mobilization or dissent. Isaias rules without institutional constraints, relying on a tight-knit security apparatus, secretive prisons, and the total absence ...

Undermining Ethiopia’s Constitutional Order: From Parliamentary System to Authoritarian Executive Power

Image
Undermining Ethiopia’s Constitutional Order: From Parliamentary System to Authoritarian Executive Power Ethiopia has a  parliamentary system  (at least constitutionally), where the Prime Minister is the chief executive. The 1995 Constitution of Ethiopia established a Federal State with parliamentary system of government giving the Prime Minister a Chief Executive and Head of Government role with ceremonial president as head of state.  Compared to presidential systems, parliamentary systems are typically more restrained, with stronger legislative oversight. The adoption of a parliamentary federal system in the 1995 FDRE Constitution was a response to the centralized dictatorship of the Derg regime and its predecessor monarchs. It aimed to: Establish two layered shared rules at Federal level and self-rule at regional state level. Promote collective executive leadership through the Council of Ministers Ensure executive accountability to parliament  Powers and Fu...
